The Color is Oranje

After missing out of the World Cup in 2002, Holland are eager for this World Cup to start. The pioneers of 'Total Football', Holland were unlucky not to win the 1974 World Cup final against Germany. Four years later, they lost the final yet again, this time to hosts Argentina. They reached the last four in 1998 when they lost to Brazil and this time, they will want to go all the way and win the Cup.

The Dutch squad selection threw a couple of surprises. Huntelaar, the top scorer in the Dutch league was left out, as was veteran Edgar Davids. I believe manager Marco Van Basten is relying too much on young players, especially at the back. After unsuccessfully trying to lure Jaap Stam from retirement, Basten has no option but to have confidence in his relatively inexperienced defence. Davids should have been retained for he not only adds experience to the team but also physical strength.

Ruud is certain to score goals for them as always, in spite of his problems at Manchester United, and a lot of hope is pinned on Van der Vaart, who is yet to return to full fitness after a spate of injuries. Vaart has been terrific for his club Hamburg this season and was a key figure for the oranje in their qualifiers too. Robben will look to attack from the wings but can he overcome the physical challenge posed by strong teams in their 'group of death' - Serbia, Argentina and debutants Ivory Coast?

Can the eternal underachievers claim the ultimate prize in football this time? Only time will tell...and Ruud may want to prove a point too.

Probable Team...

Van der Saar
Heitinga Mathijsen Boulahrouz Gio
Kuyt Van Bommel Cocu Robben
Van der Vaart
Van Nistelrooy

Goalkeepers: Edwin van der Sar (Manchester United), Maarten Stekelenburg (Ajax), Henk Timmer (AZ Alkmaar).

Defenders: Kew Jaliens (AZ Alkmaar), Jan Kromkamp (Liverpool), Andre Ooijer (PSV Eindhoven), John Heitinga (Ajax), Khalid Boulahrouz (Hamburg), Joris Mathijsen (AZ Alkmaar), Giovanni van Bronckhorst (Barcelona), Tim de Cler (AZ Alkmaar).

Midfielders: Mark van Bommel (Barcelona), Philip Cocu (PSV Eindhoven), Denny Landzaat (AZ Alkmaar), Hedwiges Maduro (Ajax), Wesley Sneijder (Ajax), Rafael van der Vaart (Hamburg).

Strikers: Dirk Kuyt (Feyenoord), Ruud van Nistelrooy (Manchester United), Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink (PSV Eindhoven), Arjen Robben (Chelsea), Robin van Persie (Arsenal), Ryan Babel (Ajax).

Yeah, what happened?

Makaay and Castalen are proven scorers for the national team and it's a real pity not to select them.

So is Edgar Davids, Clarence Seedorf and Patrick Kluivert. What happened to Van Basten?

Makaay has not been in good form this season...in the initial par of the season, he scored 8 goals or so in the first 4 matches...then came his incredible dip in form. that's y Basten has left him out...i think he has good faith in Ruud.

@soccerguy
Kluivert has been laid low this season due to injuries and he has hardly played this season. i think kluivert can as well retire from int'l football 'cos i dont think he will be picked unless he goes on a great run, scoring lots of goals. also, there are so many good young strikers like huntelaar waiting to get into the squad.

i was disappointed Davids wasn't picked...the reason Van Basten gave was Davids is old and he has enough cover in his position.

i suppose not picking seedorf is a good move...he can no longer claim a place in the first team...he is no longer the player he is, just like Kluivert.

@rogerz
welcome! holland do have a good team but we have to wait and see if they can become the best by winning the WC.

Vaart will be the focal point of attack through the centre. Their 3 pronged attack is terrific. Dirk Kuyt on the bench is a testimony to the riches in their strike dept. But van Persie is a left footer. Maybe Robben will play on the right.

I'd really like Holland to go the distance(next only to Spain and Portugal) bcoz' this will be the final chance of glory for the two veterans, Cocu and Edwin. They've been simply amazing.

Their defence looks paperweight atleast for a world cup occassion. The dutch defenders sound more alien to me than the tongue-twisting serbian players' names. More than Robben it's their defence which should fear about having to counter the guile of Messi, genius of Riquelme, the instincts of Kezman, the towering Zigic and the bull called Drogba.

Simply said, Holland will have to score loads of goals

agree with u....davids just in front of the defence would help their cause...i cant see anyone in midfield who can duel with Riquelme. Drogba would definitely be a handful for their defence, especially in the air, from dead-ball situations.

Cocu has a real job on his hands.

I think davids is past his prime.He doesnt play the holding role at spurs and the last time i saw hm play in that position Ballack bossed and bullied him for 45 mins before he was substituted in the Euro championships.
Plus his temparement is also suspect.Great player no doubt ..

i believe Holland can do well only if they manage to come out of the 'group of death' safe and progress into the next round.

Lucky u!!!! Have great fun at Germany!!!!!!

Will they? Some muscular boys from Serbia, cote D'Ivoire are going to bombard them at the back. Argentina's wounds last WC will still be fresh in memory. Lot of pressure on forwards to bang in atleast 3 goals every match.

In ur formation..Whats is kuyt doing in midfield?
Is that hw they start?
Maybe van der waart and kuyt s posns must be swapped.
