Pick of the Week

I have not been able to update my blog for a long time...my apologies for that. The past couple of weeks have seen some great action across Europe. Some of the goals that really caught my eye and ranked accordingly are these...

1. Nakamura's awesome freekick, giving Celtic a win over ManU. One of the best freekicks I have ever seen. Just unstoppable!

2. Ronaldinho can't seem to stop scoring lately, his incredible overhead kick goal hit the final nail over Villareal's coffin.

3. Jermaine Defoe scored a peach of a goal, bamboozling the Wigan defenders. This guy is a terrific but underrated striker and needs to start more regularly for Tottenham.

4. Saha did a Ronaldinho over Chelsea, taking a shot from a tight angle and scoring a wonderful goal with his great left foot. Pity, it wasn't the winning goal!

5. Blackburn's Tugay is well-known for his long range kicks, so it was no surprise when he hit that stunning strike from nearly 30 yards. What a volley!!!!!

There's a rumor that Cannavaro is certain to land the prize of BalloonD'Or or the European player of the year, followed by Buffon and Henry. I feel Eto'o deserves that honour more than anyone else. His wonderful scoring record last season both in Spain and in Europe was the main catalyst in Barca doing a double. No doubt, Cannavaro was incredible at that World Cup but that alone does not make him more worthy than Eto'o.
My Pick would be Eto'o, Ronaldinho, Deco, Henry, Kaka...in that order.

All goals are one hell of a shot! Definetely some of them are going to be contenders for goal-of-the-season. Well, even though how I hated Nakamura dashed Man Utd's hopes, the quality of the free-kick is just absolutely speechless - up there with Beckham at his best!

And so Cannavaro won the European Player of the Year, eh? As far as he is concerned, I think the WC was the platform he shone on. Other than that - and as far as I am concerned - I was the least impressed with him whenever I see him play at Real, albeit how little I saw of Spanish football.

The EU and World Player of the Year Awards are turning out to be a farce. No doubt, Cannavaro was awesome at the World Cup but one should remember who was in front of him doing all the dirty work like tackling, winning the ball - Pirlo and Gattuso. Juve dint even make it to the semis in the CL whereas the above duo's AC Milan did!

Zidane was great for just 2 or 3 games at the WC and now he is on the shortlist! Whereas, players like Deco and Henry who performed at the highest level in the CL and the WC are ignored!

If the criteria of selection is just performing at the World Cup, why was Ronaldinho nominated? Ahh, he did win the CL and La Liga, but then so did Deco and Eto'o!

CAnnavaro might not have done well in UCL but Eto didnt play in the WC and that is bound to go against him.

Arsenal fan apart, i think Henry deserved it more than anything else. He has a great run in UCL,WC and scored goals and had lots of assists. I dont understand how he came behind Buffon? Plus i thought that the Juve scam would have gone against Buffon and Cannavaro. Definitely not wishful thinking.

Shortlisting Zidane and Ronaldinho for the World player of the year is a bloody farce. One didnt do anything for his club and the other hardly touched the ball during the WC.

Henry must be thinking what he has to do to get 1 of these awards?
